Here is a video of Maria Callas singing Habanera from Carmen (the music plays for awhile before she starts to sing) :
Here is a video of Renata Tebaldi singing Un bel di vedremo from Madame Butterfly:
Now, while Tebaldi is a lyrical soprano and Callas is a dramatic soprano, they are often compared. I want to know which you prefer, and why!
Enjoy!

Post a CommentI like Callas in roles that demand a harsher, more dramatic performances and Tebaldi in roles that demand a softer, more lyrical voice. I don't think it's really fair to either to compare them. It was all started as a publicity stunt in the '50's. Both are divine; I cannot choose.

While I think you're right, they will forever be compared. Anyone great like that is going to be. It's just the way of things.
I'm a big Callas fan. Her soul speaks to me when she sings, and yes; as Princesskitty22 said, she's wonderful for those dramatic performances - which she performed so beautifully. But to me, comparing them is like comparing apples and oranges. Just not the same and both amazing talents.
If you're interested in opera, you might enjoy watching 'Bathroom Divas' on Ovation each night. It's a reality show competition where they take 6 untrained singers and train them for 3 weeks, each day eliminating someone; the last day choosing just one to perform at an opera house in Canada. We're hooked on it.
I agree, Marci. I love watching her perform! She is wonderful at capturing emotion.
With Tebaldi I could just listen to her sing for hours and have a great feeling, but I really love watching Callas. Something about her.
That's cool. I should check out that show. It sounds like it'd be interesting.

I feel like Princesskitty and I are
amongst tumbleweeds, lol.
Though I'm not familiar with either singer or their backgrounds, both sound so amazing!
Maria Callas; I know nothing about opera however there is something about Maria's voice that I prefer; almost like her voice is more graceful (if that makes any sense.) I rarely like opera however I love the song "Habanera" from Carmen (maybe my vote is biased?lol.)
Hey, a biased opinion is still an opinion!
Maria Callas is the greatest soprano who ever sang! She had it all great singing ability, great dramatic acting skill and great interpretative ability. She is to sopranos as Caruso was to tenors...the best of the best!
