Well, I've officially had my first expirience with watching opera in a movie theater; and I have to say that it was quite enjoyable. Of course, nothing beats the live show, but it was nice to be able to relax, in comfy clothes and watch a great opera. It was also nice to the enjoy views and sound of the best seat in the house for a price that, at the actual Opera, would leave you sitting...somewhere on Market St. with a radio. So, there you are. If you have a chance to go to an Opera at the movies, I would recommend it. Now, on to the actual show.

This was also my first time seeing Don Giovanni. It was wonderful. Mozart truly was a master. The music was sweeping and entrancing. The story was a compelling one; with a nice balance of tragedy and dark humor. However, I scarcely need to tell any Opera fan that Don Giovanni is a good opera, so I'll go on to the production in question.

Don Giovanni was played by Mariusz Kwiecien and Leoporello was played by Oren Gradus. While neither of these men had voices that blew me away, they were wonderful in their roles. Kwiecien had the cocky persona of Giovanni down pat. Gradus was an absolute delight. His comic timing and facial expressions were impeccable. Donna Anna was played by Elza Van Den Heever. This girl is going to be a star. Her voice was clear and strong; you could see through her high notes, they were so clear. She's also a good actress. Don Ottavio was Charles Castronovo. He had a lovely voice with a beautiful upper register. He played his part very well. Donna Elvira was played wonderfully by Twyla Robinson. Zerlina was played by Claudia Mahnke. She had a lovely voice and was very funny. Masetto was played by Luca Pisaroni. He was absolutely adorable. Last but not least, the Commendatore was played by Kristinn Sigmundsson. He was terrifying at the end. The chorus was also very good. All and all it was wonderful cast.

This was Leah Hausman's directorial debut for the San Francisco Opera. I'd say we'll be hearing from Hausman; the production was beautiful.
